Tradition has it that this crystal, which naturally exhibits a dark and raised cruciform marking, was formed from the tears of faeries shed at news of the death of Jesus Christ
However, the crystal has a long pre-Christian history, particularly as a talisman for protection or good luck and it is also used to strengthen magickal and spiritual rituals (note that the cross taken together with the roughly circular stone approximates to a Celtic cross symbolising earth, air, fire, water and spirit).
